The Superfood Clan’s Newest Golden Child: Sea Buckthorn Berry

A new contender has entered the search for amazing superfoods — the unassuming but mighty Sea Buckthorn berry, or Sea Berry for short. Once living semi-anonymously, and known mainly only within the European and Central Asia regions, the Sea Buckthorn Berry (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) has remarkable nutritional value bursting from within. It is a fraction of the size of an orange but contains at least 10 times as much vitamin C. It is also a potent antioxidant — estimated to be 7 times higher than turmeric and 10 times higher than acai berry.

Small but Mighty Berries

It is truly amazing how every part of the sea buckthorn plant, from its roots to its fruits, is brimming with benefits that will nourish you inside and out.Th ese berries are a nutritional powerhouse that is sure to leave your taste buds and your body feeling satisfied, packed with an abundance of carbohydrates, protein, organic acids, amino acids, and a variety of vitamins. In fact, it's one of the most vitamin C-rich fruits on the planet.

But that's not all—it also packs a punch with an astounding ORAC value (a measure of antioxidant) of 895,281 μmolTE/100g. This is the highest ever measured in superfoods, and all packaged within a tiny little orange globule of a fruit.

They are also a unique source of Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega-7 and Omega-9 fatty acids, and are one of the few vegan sources of complete omegas. It's worth mentioning that sea buckthorn berries contain a high amount of omega-7, which is rare among other fruits and vegetables. Sea buckthorn oil is particularly rich in omega-7, containing up to 30% palmitoleic acid, which can help with inflammation, blood sugar regulation, weight management and skin health.

Sharing the Goodness of Europe with the World

Romanian company Bio Catina Agricultural Cooperative, as a collective, wishes to share the goodness of this super-fruit with the world through their certified organic Energyne products. Every inch of their 250-hectare land is put to use cultivating these small, bright orange spheres, with strictly organic processes as certified by the SRAC CERT S.R.L., one of the top accreditation bodies in Romania.

Its impressively high-yield farms produce berries that are ultimately cold-pressed into juices or dehydrated into powder form which can be conveniently added to a variety of sweet and savoury dishes for immunity-boosting properties. Being a berry, it comes as a surprise to most that it has a high-fat content. Oil extracted from the fruit can be both ingested or applied topically. The health and beauty industry is beginning to experience buzz over the beautifying effects that this fruit can offer. Sea Buckthorn contains proanthocyanidins that have been shown to display strong anti-ageing activity in human skin fibroblasts.

Transforming our Food Supply

Sea buckthorn berries are becoming increasingly popular as a functional food, due to their nutrient density and various health benefits. As a result, they are starting to make an impact on the food supply by being used as an ingredient in various food products In line with one of the UN's 2030 Agenda objectives - to achieve global food security - the primary recommended step would be disrupting and diversifying the global food chain by popularising and demystifying the uses of unconventional food plants, ancestral grains, flowers and edible insects as sources of nutrients.

With these small proportions, shipping and distribution costs are significantly lower. Consider this: a shipping container of oranges equals x amount of vitamin C. The same container of Sea Berries would contain 10 times that amount of vitamin C. What’s more, the versatility of the berry is unmatched within the superfood arena, with turmeric being its only worthy opponent.
Given how open, receptive and keenly adventurous the current generation is, there is no doubt that these beautiful little berries that glow like citrine gemstones will take the industry by storm.
